What does a comedian owe the audience when the news stops being funny?
The 2016 and 2024 cycles both forced late-night hosts to decide how much of the show is civic duty versus comedy. Stephen can describe the calculus in the writers' room when a joke is funny but feels inadequate to what happened that day.
Is there a version of the late-night show that survives without the celebrity promotional circuit?
The format exists partly as a marketing channel. If that function moves entirely to podcasts and TikTok, what's left is a comedian and a desk — which might be enough, or might not.
What actually changed in the writers' room between the Bush years and now?
The joke-writing process for political comedy has to account for audiences who now arrive with the entire news cycle already loaded. Jon and Stephen can compare how the premise of 'what if they don't know?' has evaporated.
