    Houston is its own kind of displacement for everyone who lands there.

    Mo grew up in Houston after fleeing Kuwait. It's a city of transplants and contradictions — set up the idea that his 'American' story is actually a very Houston story.

    When your mom is the funniest person in the room, do you ever feel like you're just transcribing her?

    Mo's mother is a beloved presence in his comedy. Ask how much of his material is inherited versus invented, and whether she approves of his edits.

    The best immigrant comedy never explains itself to the people who need it explained.

    Mo's work doesn't cater to a white audience. That's rare. Make the claim and ask whether he feels pressure to translate his culture.
