Project Starline was a bet that presence, not pixels, is the hard problem
Clay led Google's AR/VR efforts and Starline, a light-field telepresence booth that tried to make remote conversation feel like a shared room. The interesting claim to test on VUX World: the technical bottleneck was never resolution or frame rate, it was the dozen small social cues — gaze, micro-expression, turn-taking — that screens strip out. That's the same list conversational interfaces still struggle with.
What did the AR/VR hype cycle get wrong that conversational AI is now repeating?
Both waves arrived with a demo that overwhelmed people and a decade-long gap between that demo and something you'd use daily. Clay has lived through one of those gaps from the inside. What were the early warning signs he'd now recognize, and which of them are visible in agentic AI right now?
The agentic web needs design conventions the way the graphical web needed the link
We got underlined blue text, the back button, and the scrollbar — cheap shared grammar that let anyone build a page. Agents that browse, book, and buy on a user's behalf have no equivalent yet. This is a claim to put to Clay: without those conventions, every agent integration stays bespoke and fragile.
