The OpenAI alum betting the next wave of AI won’t look like ChatGPT

Sane + 🌶️ takes in an insane AI world... AI capabilities researcher: co-created RLHF/ChatGPT @ @openai now trying to right the wrong 🤭 (ceo @typesafeai)

This week in AI focuses on AI demos & interviews with AI's top personalities.
Diogo Almeida is the founder of TypeSafe AI and previously worked at OpenAI on InstructGPT and the research that helped turn language models into useful assistants.
Now he’s questioning one of the basic assumptions of the AI boom: if these models are already so intelligent, why have they automated so little actual work?
TypeSafe’s answer is Jev — a different kind of AI model built around decisions rather than conversation. Instead of generating paragraphs of text that software then has to interpret, Jev takes in context and returns typed decisions with probabilities that software can act on directly.
The idea seems to have struck a nerve. Within 24 hours of appearing on Vercel’s AI Gateway, Jev was being used by nearly 13% of paid teams — more than twice the adoption of any previous model launch on the platform.
That makes the conversation bigger than “here’s another new AI model.”
Diogo is effectively making the case that the next major wave of AI may not come from making chatbots endlessly smarter. It may come from making intelligence cheap, fast and reliable enough to disappear inside ordinary software.

📡 Why now: Almeida's TypeSafe AI launch hit 38M+ views on September 15
On September 15, 2026, Almeida publicly launched Jev — a decision-optimized frontier model built on a new training method called RLCD — with his launch thread accumulating over 38 million views in day...

Jev Goes Viral: Did the Launch Prove the Thesis?
Jev dropped September 15th, hit a trillion tokens a day, and got waitlisted open within a week — but the benchmarks are all self-published. This Week in AI listeners need Diogo to separate the real signal from the hype cycle his own launch created.
RLHF's Original Sin: Why Diogo Turned Against His Own Invention
He co-created RLHF, the method that made ChatGPT possible, and now calls it structurally broken for automation. Nobody is better positioned to explain exactly where the technique goes wrong — and nobody has more skin in the game admitting it.
RLCD vs. RLHF vs. RLVR: The Post-Training War
The field is splitting into camps: human feedback, verifiable rewards, and now Diogo's calibrated decisions. This is the most important technical debate in applied AI right now, and he's one of the only people who has built inside all three paradigms.
